Kokeshi dolls are made from wood. The wood is dried naturally before being shaped with simple tools. The finished shape is then polished with rice plant or ‘Tokusa', a type of grass. The vibrant Kokeshi colours are achieved using Indian ink, carefully applied by hand. The final stage is a smooth application of fine wax, giving each doll its soft glow.
As the Kokeshi dolls are hand painted, no two faces are alike.
